The second round of the Finnish Championship took place on 10th and 11th of July at Kemora Race track. Milla Mäkelä started the weekend from P4 in the championship standings aiming to get better results after the difficulties in the opening round at Ahvenisto in June.
“We were struggling a bit with set ups at Ahvenisto and the results were not what we were looking for. We got the shock absorbers serviced and saw that they got damaged in the collision at the end of last season. The car became as good as it was a year ago when we managed to take double win in one weekend, so the hopes were high to gain places in this second round!” Milla sums up the start of the season.
Milla was well within the tight top 4 in V8 Thunder class and the races were intense on both days. Race 1 was driven on dry track and Milla took a firm P3 with solid driving. Race 2 on Sunday was another story. The warm up lap was driven with slicks and the grid was ready for the start lights, but then the rain came out of nowhere. The start was cnacelled and the cars headed to the pit lane for tire change. Milla’s windscreen wipers didn’t work and dispite good tries to fix it Milla had to do the race without wipers. Almost everyone in the top 4 went out of the track at some point of the race due to aqua planning or low visibility.
“The tire show was crazy! And the whole race was so intense. The places changed several times when everyone went out at some point but there were also real overtakes and close on track battles all over. I went out in the fastest corner of track due to aqua planning. On dry track it’s an over 220km/h corner. I went quite far but didn’t hit anything and got back on track loosing only on position. After a couple of laps I got back to P3 and was able to finish the race there.” Milla recaps the action packed race 2.
The next race takes place at Botniaring on 31st July and 1st August. Last season Milla gained a double win on that same track and she sets the goal to be in front of the top 4 then 😉
